Well you can use egg whites, brush them into your hair and let them dry. Or use gelatin and let it dry. Elmer's white glue can also work. I would stay away from paint but it can work as well.

well elmers glue ive found works well. a buddy of mine also told me that ky gelly is best for the big spikes. if your hair is wavy you may have to try blow drying it and flat ironing it first then use a reallly really sticky hairspray to stick it in place. thats what i had to do with my mohawk.
