At this point you getting a relaxer will do nothing but damage your hair more.It would be best to try getting braids for a while.

Use a good hot oil treatment first...then shampoo and deep condition. Go to sally beauty supply you will find lots of good hot oils and conditioners for black hair. I suggest you use a good cholesterol conditioner. Also you can try Smooth and Shine Therapy silk fusion (60 second critical repair). It's a great product for african american hair. I use it and it was wonderful... I found it at sally beauty supply.

Expect to lose a large amount of hair, if it's been tucked away in a bun for some days.

Get some natural oils, so your hair will be as moist as possible, in its best condition, before the perm.

Head to the kitchen, if you can't make it to the store.

~best

I dont know about before, but after I get mine relaxed my hair dresser uses aPHogee damage treatment. That helps with some breakage. aPHogee actually has a whole line of products that are targeted at damaged hair. From my personal experience the best way to repair damage is to cut off the breakage and try to stay away from blow drying and too much product. You really don't need much of anything in your hair anyways.

Oh, but cholesterol is a good conditioner (I like it anyways). Its not going to magically fix any breakage though.
