if you don't like wax use a strong wax like BedHead's "The Stick" or Paul Mitchell has "Dry Wax" otherwise you have a very small selection to choose from.

I think you pretty much either have to use gel or something similar to it, like hair wax or a paste. Other than that there are the regular products like hairspray and mousse. The best way to find out what will work best is to go to a beauty supply store and try some of the products. You won't know how your hair will react until you try. I definitely think a brand like Tigi, Redken or one of the Hair Sexy Concept brands would work great and not be as damaging to your hair.

If your concern is product build-up, just be sure to use a good cleansing shampoo once a week.

I recommend you use something like Neutrogena's Anti-Residue Formula or Tresemme's cleaning shampoo (which comes in a giant bottle and is really cheap). Wash your hair with one of these shampoos on a Sunday, deep condition it afterwards, then avoid gel for that day. Repeat weekly (but don't do it more than twice weekly MAX as it will strip your hair of its natural oils). If your hair is really suffering, try a hot oil treatment as well. I have seen hot oil treatments do miracles to people's dry, damaged hair.
